{lusting: hudson's bay point blanket}

The Hudson's Bay Company is as Canadian as Canadian gets, in fact it's history of fur trading posts goes back before our country's existence! In those early days, the Hudson Bay Point Blanket {first introduced in 1780} was often traded in exchange for beaver pelts; today this blanket is an iconic collectible often passed down from generation to generation. I would love to own one of these beautiful wool blankets one day, I still kick myself over the fact that I came across one at an antique shop in great condition for only $80 {they retail from $275-$475} and didn't grab it and run! As a first-generation Canadian, I would love to pass this iconic piece on in my own family!

I love this neutral variation on the classic palette as well, it would fit well in modern spaces:

The wool blankets range from $275 to $475 {also available in the US at L.L.Bean and Woolrich}, BUT did you know that The Bay has added a fleece throw with the iconic stripes for only $35? Pair it with the little illustrated history book, 'The Blanket,' and I think this would make a rather charming Christmas gift!

At that price, I may just have to pick up a throw for myself!

I've always loved these too. My mom used to have a winter coat with these iconic stripes around the bottom. I'd love to find an antique blanket someday :)

Great post! I love these blankets too and my mom also had one of the coats way back when. I have seen the blankets for sale on ebay. Sometimes not in perfect shape, but often there are nice ones. You might want to check there?

I love these blankets and the wool one is about the warmest thing you could ever sleep under! My mother-in-law has one and it's definitely on my wish list.

A true Canadian classic! It's such a shame that The Hudson's Bay Company is no longer Canadian owned.
Have a lovely day, Nancy,

I want some too for my son's room. Have been searching for over half a year. Funny - I know EXACTLY which blanket you passed over - I saw it too at the antique mall with Carol Smyth, kick myself too. I think I am going to get the fleece version, I need one for each bunk bed and easy to wash. My son really wants them, love the whole "campy" look they bring to a room!

Me too Nancy! I so want one of these. My Great Uncle (when I was so young, first venturing off on my own, and oh, so naïve) was passing some of his extra linens on to me... a Hudson's Bay blanket was in the mix and I declined it! Can you believe that?!!! :-|

Love it... but I'm with Sundeep... I'd probably choose the fleece version if I wanted to cuddle up with a blanket. Such an iconic Canadian piece.

They just look so cozy, comfortable and chic. Wish I was wrapped up in one right now!

Hi Nancy, I remember the first time I saw one of these blankets and then I researched and found out how much they were and realized I would probably not be buying one. The Fleece would be a fun option and make a fun gift for Christmas!! Thank you for the heads-up!! Happy Halloween,
Kathysue

I discovered your blog a few months ago on "Made by Girl" and I really ♥♥♥ it ! I like to discover the design and beautiful pieces that you have oversea (I'm from Paris) and these blankets are just gorgeous... They give authenticity to a room ! Thank you again for this new discovery even if I'm not sure we can find them here in France...!

Love the fur version, too, bijouandboheme!!! But due to allergies, appreciate the fleece throw! Love the neutral stripe headboard! Happy Trick or Treating! ;) Check out the comments kids have been saying tonight on our facebook page! Soooo cute!

I so want one! This will be my number one on the list for Xmas. Given that I live so far away now, a Hudson Bay blanket would be the perfect homesickness comforter…
