{art inspiration: maps}

You've probably seen large-scale maps used in interiors as artwork time and time again, it's a classic look with an architectural reference that I love. And while you'd probably jump to thinking of a cozy den, home office, or library as the perfect place ... there are actually many fabulous options!

The hallway, for instance:

And my favorite I've come across - the dining room! I've never seen maps look so darn glamorous ...

My favorite look is the sort of old-word sepia coloring. I found a source for a gorgeous piece via Restoration Hardware, it's a map of the 'Plan de Paris' from 1739:

Stunning, but the idea of maps as art doesn't have to break the bank - this could be an easy DIY! Using your favorite map can be personal & practical; a memory of a favorite trip or even your own home town in any colorway you desire. You could even do a grouping similar to the one below using several 8.5x11 pieces allowing you to print each section  of the map on your own home printer.

Have any of you included maps as art in your own homes?

I like to decorate with maps, I have about three on my walls in my apartment. I love gallery walls made of maps, too!

I love these vintage style maps especially the gallery of maps. That narrow hallway is pretty sweet with the great herringbone flooring and the lamps.

I love map art and they're great for feminine or masculine rooms. I love the really old ones best :)

I LOVE maps in rooms too! There is something so romantic and they always enrich a room's decor! I have been looking for some great ones for our bonus room and you have given me some great ideas!

Thanks!

A definite DO. After a trip to Japan several years ago, I came across a beautiful sheet of wrapping paper at Paper Source that was a map of Tokyo. I had it framed in my hallway in the loft...It still doesn't have a permanent home in the new house yet, but it's such a lovely reminder of one of my favorite trips of all time!

Yes! We have a few maps in our home that we've framed. However, I LOVE the idea of finding a very large scale map, and either framing it in one big piece or breaking it up into a gallery, like the last photo. Our framed maps are only poster size-ish.

I absolutely love maps! and I am always on the look out for them. I actually have a very large USA map that my husband used to show his kids where they had traveled to. It's all folded up now because I kept thinking that I needed to find a very large frame for it - but you just gave me a great idea! We can cut it into smaller pieces and frame them side by side! yeay! thanks!

My FIL has some amazing maps from around the world in his office. They look fantastic. I always thought I'd put one in a kids room maybe someday! :)

Lovin' the maps ...... I do believe that Restoration Hardware can take credit for starting up that trend, I think. It's cool because you can tailor your map to your favorite country or city. I'm thinking of getting a map of NYC. They can come in handy too!!

Hi Nancy, Yes I love to use maps in my home. In my bedroom I have a large map of Paris that I framed in quadrants. Here's a link to the post: http://allaboutvignettes.blogspot.com/2012/01/chair-obsession-part-four.html

The second image in the post has the maps.

One of my friends sent me a link to this post because she knows I have a bit of an obsession over maps. We finally managed to hang our Paris one in our guest bedroom ( posted here (http://www.noaslibellule.blogspot.com/2012/02/pay-and-display-our-house.html) but I have several others waiting. I love the idea of cutting them into different frames though! A great inspirational post on maps.

I bought what I thought was a reprinted vintage map of Italy for $5 at the Castello Di Amorosa vineyard in Napa. It turns out it was a piece of wrapping paper, but it is so beautiful that I put it in a frame to hang in my kitchen!
