New Adventures In Renovating!

Hi everyone! Thanks for popping by today - I'm excited to finally have the first "before" shot of the home we recently purchased (and many more 'befores' to come soon!!). We haven't quite got our hands on the home yet, but soon enough we will be in demolition mode; there is plenty to  tear down including walls, a fireplace, pink carpets, and 1989 wallpapers everywhere. And I mean EVERYWHERE. I'm nervous but excited. Any wallpaper removal tricks you may have are much appreciated ;)

For today, a look at the exterior of the home. It's on a great street and it's got good bones but needs a bit of re-working:

So here's what I'm dreaming up ... of course budget may come into play but if we can we would love to add shakes, replace the upper windows and the front door, add oversized lighting and shutters, paint, and re-do the landscaping. Here's a wee mock up of what I'd love to see happen to this little diamond in the rough:

Can you picture it coming into our current decade? I think little changes could go a long way in modernizing this home. I'd love to hear your thoughts and your ideas of what you would do if you were to renovate the exterior of this home! I'm quite thrilled to share the process along the way with you, honestly my first reno was the reason I even started blogging some 5 years ago. Thanks for joining in my next journey!

What type of program are you using to modify the exterior of your home? tI have been looking into easy to use computer programs. Thank you very much.

Looks like a fun reno project! I think painting the brick a neutral color (white? gray?) would give the home a fresh look!

Tips for removing wallpaper... soak it and then leave it alone for about 5 minutes. Repeat that about 4-5 times depending on the paper. Let the mixture of water and wallpaper remover do the hard work for you. Once the glue is softened, you can start scraping the backing paper off the wall. Turn up the music, have a beer/glass of wine and have at it. Good luck and congratulations!

Fabulous idea for upstairs windows. The shutters really add charm. I like the gables of your new home. Lovely!

Like I said to you and Nick...fabric softener diluted in water put into a spray bottle! I can come and help you :)
Love the exterior mock-up!

I saw a tool some where that you roll over the wallpaper and it pokes many tiny holes in the paper.... Then if you spray it with The fabric solution it might work even better. Good luck! Looks like a great house!

Like Jayne said, I think painting the exterior brick a white or light grey would look good with the additions you have in mind. Flower beds along the side of the driveway would also look nice.

Thank you everyone for your tips and tricks for wallpaper, and your suggestions for the exterior!

Mary, I actually did not use a program. I simply cut and paste images onto the original image and colored things myself using photoshop. Someone needs to come up with a handy program for that!!

Love the shutters and new paint on garage and trim. Would love to see some impressive outdoor light fixtures next to the garage as well. Looking forward to following along. Thanks for sharing.
