One Room Challenge Week 4 | Breakfast Nook | Spring 2016

The toughest week for this ORC yet! Time is ticking and the artwork for this breakfast nook is what is stressing me out the most. Last week I mentioned I'm struggling to choose between 1 large piece, or a series/grouping on the large white wall - 1 piece will break the bank a bit more so I may resort to a grouping. Or, if I'm feeling gutsy I could buy a giant canvas and try to come up with something myself, eek!! Above is the one piece I've purchased so far, a lovely gold bamboo frame to showcase one of my own pieces that I actually did way back in high school, so at least it has personal meaning. And a hint of blue will go well with the blue & white centerpieces I hope to use on the table. I'm going to place this piece here:
I've hated this wall as it separates the corner of our kitchen from the eating nook, but of course, it's load bearing :( So I figure at least if there is pretty art to distract, it won't be quite as bad.
We are awaiting this buttery soft faux (aka wipeable) leather so we can get going on the chair reupholstery project, please come on time!
Gotta get the DIY frosted glass done this week for the French doors, and then after that it'll be all about the styling, I'm hoping for a spring brunch tabletop vibe!
Here's my to-do's from last week with an update on where I am at:
  1. Order and frame all artwork (2-4 pieces total, got 1 done so far)
  2. Order faux white leather (awaiting it's arrival) and foam
  3. Re-upholster chairs
  4. Buy place mats and a centerpiece
  5. Order the accent pillows for the chairs
  6. DIY frost screens for the French doors for privacy

Hop here to see my nursery update, and of course check out all the amazing ORC projects on Calling It Home blog!

One Room Challenge Week 4 | Nursery | Spring 2016

Well it scares me that I just typed Week 4 in the title of this post. I think I have to agree with Linda, host of the ORC, who says week 4 is the toughest. Not a ton completed, but still some important progress in our masculine nursery project. We (as in poor hubby) built the vintage-inspired roadster (above), and the hardware for the daybed drawers arrived (below) but has yet to be installed:

Oh and the really big deal? We ordered the crib on Sunday and it already arrived yesterday!!! Phew, I was so fearful that I'd be all embarrassed posting a nursery reveal without a crib!
Here is my checklist from last week with some quick updates:
  1. Purchase and frame art (I decided to go with a grouping of frames above the daybed, and ordered this, this, this and this from anewall - awaiting their arrival)
  2. Purchase and swap hardware on daybed (arrived and just need to do it!)
  3. Purchase Hudson's Bay blanket (awaiting it's arrival)
  4. Get the pillow forms for all the daybed pillows
  5. Order the crib!! And crib bedding. (arrived and requires assembly)
  6. Select and order a rug (awaiting this one from Rugs USA to arrive)
  7. Build the little vintage roadster
  8. Some DIY art, perhaps the doggie silhouette but of our own puppy!
  9. Consider adding a mobile above crib??? Not sure on this one!

Oh and of course the styling is going to be the fun part - I pit the books out on the shelves including a couple of 'vintage' ones from my childhood. Hope there will be lots of nights of reading and cuddling with my little guy in this room for years to come :)

Hop here for my breakfast nook update, and of course check out what's happening with the rest of this amazing ORC group here.

One Room Challenge Week 3 | Breakfast Nook | Spring 2016

Here it goes, the update on my second space for the ORC! You can view my first space, the baby nursery, updated here. Slowly but surely with this one. I've still got a long list of to-do's, but as you can see above the STUNNING Vanderbilt pillows from one of my favorite designer pillow Etsy shops, MotifPillows have arrived! Ugh, if only you could touch the screen and feel the velvety texture. And isn't the Dove colorway  perfect with the O.co table? I die.

Boy is that large white wall screaming for some art. That's a huge decision I haven't fully made yet, turns out the beach print I previously placed on my mood board just won't quite be big enough for the space alone. It's either I go one huge print for max impact, and have the art MAKE the room, or I do a set of prints in series. Here's some inspiration for both options, I've got to hurry up and decide within the next couple of days or it likely won't come in time:

Other than that I also decided to place the chairs on a diagonal in the room to have it appear more spacious, here's a quick and dirty sketch to show you what I mean. Last week I had them placed squared to the walls which made passing through toward the pantry tight and awkward:

But now that they are on a diagonal the walking-through space is substantially better!

It's kind of more attractive looking too, which is an added bonus. Here's my to-do's from last week with an update on where I am at:
  1. Order and frame all artwork (2-4 pieces total)
  2. Order faux white leather (awaiting it's arrival) and foam
  3. Re-upholster chairs
  4. Buy place mats and a centerpiece
  5. Order the accent pillows for the chairs
  6. DIY frost screens for the French doors for privacy
Not a ton accomplished this week, but hopefully that will kick my butt into high-gear for week 4! I have to admit I'm kinda thriving off of this pressure :)

Hop over to Calling It Home blog to see all the other participants and their fabulous ORC spaces!

Things are beginning to come together in this handsome nursery, but I'm still feeling nervous that we are already in week 3! Don't forget I'm doing the ORC x 2, you can view my breakfast nook week 3 post here.

No major set backs but I'm having a wee bit of anxiety that the crib won't come in time - turns out in order to have it delivered to your nearest store location you have to go and purchase it in person, and with a 3 month old getting out of the house has been really tough! I've been relying so much on shipping to me for this ORC!!

Here is my checklist from last week with some quick updates:
  1. Purchase and frame art (I decided to go with a grouping of frames above the daybed, and ordered this, this, this and this from anewall - I'm so in love with their vintage vibe and I think the artwork is totally going to make the space!)
  2. Purchase and swap hardware on daybed (awaiting it's arrival)
  3. Purchase Hudson's Bay blanket (awaiting it's arrival)
  4. Get the pillow forms for all the daybed pillows
  5. Order the crib!! And crib bedding. Argh that one is kinda important!!
  6. Select and order a rug (awaiting this one from Rugs USA to arrive)
  7. Build the little vintage roadster
  8. Some DIY art, perhaps the doggie silhouette but of our own puppy!
  9. Consider adding a mobile above crib

I've got all the textiles now, and I'm just thrilled with the lovely Buffalo check and Parisian pillows from one of my favorite Etsy shops Old Lake George, totally the vibe I was going for and even with a little dose of French in there (since baby Marcus has French heritage on one side!). The cute little pom-poms on that massive grey pillow is going to be perfect as a floor throw pillow!

Please let there be no drama with the rest of the items coming in time!!! Eek. I'm anxious to hop over and see how everyone else is doing in week 3, head to Calling It Home to view all the posts!

One Room Challege Week 2 | Breakfast Nook | Spring 2016

Here we go, my second space for the ORC - see my first space, the nursery update here! This week the gorgeous table was delivered from O.co - and saying gorgeous doesn't even do it justice!

Can you see all of those white-filled knots and grains? LOVE. It has added so much texture to the space. I ended up choosing this table after contemplating many different designs (see my previous post, I always thought I would buy a white tulip table!) but I fell for the Hampton's vibe of this table, I get the overall white look with a lot more warmth because of the wood. Also at 42 inches across it fits while letting traffic flow be kept open.

So you can see that the table still leaves an overall "white" appearance compared to the natural rattan of the chairs. In choosing a wood table I totally thought I was going to paint the chairs white for contrast, until the table arrived and I started to love the combo. And then I saw this photo below on Christina Murphy's instagram feed and I was SOLD:

White faux leather seats it is!! I have to order the fabric and the foam this coming week! So here is my to-do list to keep me on track:
  1. Order and frame all artwork (2-4 pieces total)
  2. Order faux white leather and foam
  3. Re-upholster chairs
  4. Buy place mats and a centerpiece
  5. Order the accent pillows for the chairs
  6. DIY frost screens for the French doors for privacy

Not too bad! Let's see how much I'll have done next week :) Hop over and check out all the fun going on for the ORC over on Calling It Home blog!

One Room Challenge Week 2 | Nursery | Spring 2016

Ok peeps, it's week 2 and I'm starting off with a reminder of my mood boards so I can be specific in my follow up! (also see my second space, the breakfast nook here!). Here's my progress this week (sorry for the crappy iPhone photography, but I promise it'll make the final reveal look that much better, haha):

Day bed was purchased and assembled (thank you hubby!!!), shelves were meticulously hung (thank you dad-in-law!!), and I sorted through all the clothes and books and got them organized in the drawers! I'm feeling a lot better about this space. Keep in mind the other side of the room is still stacked with boxes/Tupperware containers. And I plan to change up the hardware on the IKEA daybed. Small goals!

Now there is a large chunk of wall above the daybed, it's directly across from the wallpapered clouds wall - so I'm trying to decide between hanging one larger piece of art here, or trying out a very simple grouping of 3 or so pieces:

via anewall

vintage plane and horse portrait via anewall

Thoughts? What would you choose?

Ok so here's a checklist of what is still needing to be done:
  1. Purchase and frame art
  2. Purchase and swap hardware on daybed
  3. Purchase Hudson's Bay blanket
  4. Get the pillow forms for all the daybed pillows
  5. Order the crib!! And crib bedding. Argh that one is kinda important!!
  6. Select and order a rug
  7. Build the little vintage roadster
  8. Some DIY art, perhaps the doggie silhouette but of our own puppy!
  9. Consider adding a mobile above crib

Let's see how much I can accomplish by next week! Eek, time already seems to be flying ... Hop over to see more from all the ORC participants here.

One Room Challenge Week 1 | Breakfast Nook | Spring 2016

Ok here is my plan for my second One Room Challenge space! Yes, you read that right - I'm taking on 2 spaces for this six-week guest participation run because these spaces desperately need completing in order for my family to function in our new home. The first space is the baby nursery you can read about here.

The second space is the breakfast nook - if we have to eat our meals juggling a baby and dinner plate on our laps on the couch for very much longer I may just pull my hair out! This space is a "box" ready to be decorated - flooring is in, light is up, French doors were swapped out, and everything is painted BM Chantilly Lace. It feels fresh and ready to be lived in! A reminder, and a glimpse to any new readers, of what the space started out like when we purchased the home:
Wowzers. Truth is we have already come a long way! wallpaper down, and perhaps the biggest change - raising the floor in the adjoining step down space so we could get rid of that divisive railing!! You can see the curved bank of windows in this photo I captured with my iPhone yesterday:

And yes, the baby carseat is part of the dĂ©cor now, haha. But yay for no more step down and no more railing by the  French doors! What a lovely sun filled and open space it is now. So this is officially my starting point today. Sounds easy right? Well, here's what I have in mind, including a couple of DIYs:

I'd like to use removable frosted glass coverings on the French doors because 1) we are too close to our lovely neighbours behind us, 2) it'll help preserve our oak floors from the sun but still let light in, 3) it isn't permanent should we change our minds!

If you've been following along in the last couple of weeks you know I've been debating what to do with these Craigslist rattan chairs. My heart is saying don't paint them, and attempt to reupholster in a faux white (wipe-able) leather all by myself, which I've never tried before! Let's see, I may change my mind half-way through and paint them! I'm going to source and hang art to liven the space up (this one is already purchased and I'm awaiting it's arrival), select the table, these killer cushions to add softness, and we should have the makings of a simple, bright and light breakfast nook! The list sounds very doable but considering it's taken me this long to get started, I figure the ORC will be just the kick in the pants I need to get the space officially done!!

Here we go! Hop over to Calling it Home blog to view all the other fabulous guest participants.

One Room Challenge Week 1 | Nursery | Spring 2016

Well, call me crazy, but even with a 3 month old baby in tow I've decided to jump in on the One Room Challenge as a guest participant. Call me even CRAZIER, but I've decided to complete the One Room Challenge x 2!!! The reasons really are that I have the "shell" of these rooms ready to go - walls painted/papered, flooring and lighting in. I'm on to the fun dĂ©cor part and honestly I have to get these rooms done ASAP for my family's sanity.

We've been moved in for several weeks and as many of you know doing any thing as a new parent just seems to take about 5x the amount of time it used to! First up is the nursery, many of you who have been following along know where I am basically at (see the photo above). Wallpaper is up, and this empty room has pretty much been sitting ever since. I've been putting it off (even though baby Marcus is 14 weeks!) because he is sleeping in our bedroom all this time - but he's getting to the point where he (and all of his darling clothes/toys) will need a space of his own. Just a little reminder, and for those of you visiting for the first time, this is where we started when we purchased the home:
And this is where we are literally yesterday (snapped with my iPhone!), it's become a dumping ground because it's an empty room, NOT good.

The one single piece of furniture I managed to pick up last week was this campaign-style dresser off of Craigslist:

So now it's time to kick this plan into high-gear and I'm hoping that this six-week long blogging challenge is going to be just the kick-in-the-pants this new and overwhelmed mama needs! Here's a peek at the plans:

So it's going to be a matter of purchasing furniture, décor items, a couple of simple DIYs with artwork and changing up the hardware on an IKEA daybed. Sounds easy right? Well I'm shaking in my boots just trying to imagine having the time to BUILD the IKEA daybed, let alone style it with the perfect textiles! Here goes nothing ;)

Be sure to check out my next post for my second One Room Challenge space! And head to Calling it Home for a look at all the other guest participants.
